Fleet Feet Albany June 2009 Newsletter |
June 2009
Hi All,

On behalf of the entire group at Fleet Feet Sports, Arlene and I hope you are well. If you are reading our newsletter for the first time, welcome to the club! We are excited to have you aboard. We are always looking for ideas to improve our newsletter, so please feel free to make suggestions.
Springtime in the Capital Region is synonymous with the annual Freihofer’s Run for Women. This year marked the 31st anniversary of the 5K and there was lots of buzz in the store about this year’s race. Registration was up, corporate groups got together to race; the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society had a team, along with Moms on the Run. If you were in Washington Park or stationed along Madison Avenue, no doubt you witnessed sisters, mothers and daughters, as well as some of our finest high school athletes, sharing the road with some of the world’s fastest women.
Freihofer’s is a unique event, and it’s right in our own backyard. It offers females of all ages and abilities the opportunity to play with some of the best. In addition to the race, the Community Walk provides a great vehicle for the many fitness walkers in our region. The kids’ races are a joy to watch, and give our youngest athletes a chance to “go the distance.”
This year, we had the distinct pleasure of hosting the Fleet Feet Sports Marketplace at the Freihofer’s Expo. This was a major undertaking by our staff and vendor partners, and a unique opportunity to serve more runners and walkers in the region. Thank you to all who visited us at the Empire State Plaza. We’re already making plans for a bigger and better expo next year.
This month also marks the culmination of our No Boundaries training program. Our team is 210 strong, and doing a fantastic job preparing for the Father’s Day 5K. We are so proud of them and can’t wait to see them strut their stuff. If you are participating in the Father’s Day 5K at The Crossings Town Park in Colonie, please stop over to help us celebrate.
Since our opening on April 20, 2006 we have held a Fun Run on Thursday nights. Please note that after our No Boundaries class graduates on Father’s Day we will be moving our Fun Run to Monday evenings at 6 p.m. Many of our No Boundaries athletes have expressed an interest in continuing with a group when the program concludes. Since Monday is already part of their schedule, we will do that in their honor. Please consider this change as an open invitation to join us. The runs are non-competitive and create a sense of community among the group. We currently have well over 100 runners and walkers in the park on Monday evenings, and we would love to add you to the group. Plan on coming, and why not invite a friend? We can create something very special, just one person at a time.
The Fleet Feet Sports Track & Field Club is coming together and should begin to train later this month. Our SportWalkers Club continues to meet on Monday nights. Those with interest in either of these groups are invited to call (518-459-3338) or stop in the store for details.
The summer months present a wonderful time to build a habit. I suspect I am among a large group of folks who train a little, but would like to be doing more. Warm weather, high spirits, and longer days all contribute to increased activity. When all is said and done, time is our most valuable asset, and we get to choose how we allocate it. Can we take the next 90 days and create a more positive, energetic life for ourselves? If any of the activities we offer at the store can be helpful, please join us. If you have suggestions for other things we should consider, we would very much enjoy hearing them.
Have a wonderful month. All of us at Fleet Feet Sports wish you the best of all things!

No Boundaries Update
The Fleet Feet Albany No Boundaries groups are more than half way to their Father’s Day 5K at The Crossings of Colonie. Everyone has been working tremendously hard, building up to a 3 mile run. We’re almost ready to “break the tape” on June 21! At its conclusion, the program, co-sponsored by Fleet Feet Sports and our friends at New Balance, will have trained over 200 participants in three locations to run or walk their first 5K event. The entire team at Fleet Feet Sports is proud of the hard work the teams have done. A special shout out goes to our coaches and mentors in Albany, Saratoga, and Glens Falls, who have really gone above and beyond by providing workouts, advice, and tons of encouragement!
Our half-way point was celebrated with a cookout outside the store. Physical Therapist Matthew Alheim led the group in a much needed post-run stretching session. Our very own “Running DJ,” Brian DeBracchio, provided an upbeat soundtrack to the evening, and a great time was had by all.
After Father’s Day, many of our No Boundaries alumni will continue to run together at the Fleet Feet Fun Runs, to be held on Monday evenings at 6 p.m. This is a non-competitive, all-comers run, so come out on those nice summer evenings and join us.
Looking ahead, stay tuned for No Boundaries: Fall Edition. All first timers are welcome; however, we also encourage No Boundaries graduates to return and mentor the newbies or prepare for a Thanksgiving Day race. Check the newsletter for more information in the coming months, call us, or just stop by the store. We’d love to see you. Please help us spread the word by forwarding this newsletter to folks you know who might by looking for a supportive, healthy program like No Boundaries. We thank you and they’ll thank you, too.

“Supercharge Your Diet,” a recent article on CNN.com, discusses several superfoods that anyone interested in a healthy lifestyle should incorporate into their diets. While there are no true “miracle” foods, these fruits, vegetables, grains and seeds are packed with nutrition. As part of a well-balanced diet, they may even help lower your risk of some diseases:

Barley: Whole grains are nutritionally dense and have been shows to reduce the risk of chronic diseases. The fiber in barley is considered to be particularly healthy.

Kefir: A fermented dairy drink popular in the Middle East, kefir is a good source of calcium and also contains beneficial bacteria to stimulate the production of immune cells. Many yogurts also contain such beneficial bacteria, but kefir is loaded. Plus, a single glass delivers nearly 1/3 of the recommended calcium intake for adults.

Pomegranates: Pomegranates have been around for centuries, but the deep red fruit has garnered a lot of attention recently. It’s loaded with polyphenols that have been linked to cancer prevention.
Avocados: Packed with a number of nutrients, including vitamin C, folate, vitamin E, and fiber, avocados are considered a good addition to a heart-healthy diet. A good source of monosaturated fats, avocados help lower LDL (bad cholesterol) levels while raising beneficial HDL cholesterol.

Flaxseed: This nutrient rich seed is packed with fiber and Omega-3 fatty acids, helping to reduce both cholesterol and blood pressure. Flaxseed is also rich in lignans, a plant compound that may be effective in preventing colon tumors and fighting breast and uterine cancer.

Berries: All varieties are chock full of anthocyanins, which have been linked to healthy aging. Research suggests anthocyanins may protect against inflammation, a major cause of diseases like arthritis.
Beets: This colorful root vegetable is rich in folate, a nutrient important for cell growth. The pigment that gives beets their red/purple hue is also believed to help fight cancer. Eating beets may also help keep the brain healthy, as insufficient folate in one’s diet may raise the risk of dementia, according to a recent study in the Journal of Nutrition.
Kale: Going green is always a good idea. In addition to being packed with cancer-fighting agents, leafy greens like kale may also be good for your bones. Kale is a good source of non-dairy calcium. It also is loaded with vitamin K, which some studies suggest may boost bone health.
