Fleet Feet Albany January 2008 Newsletter

A sincere Happy New Year to all of our club members from myself, Arlene and the entire staff of Fleet Feet Sports. We trust you all had an enjoyable holiday season and are anxious to "get on with it."

As you will see with this edition we are moving forward with our continuing education series. Many thank in advance to the staff at John Repsher Physical Therapy for generously providing their time. Did you know that the number one incidence of Workmans Compensation is Plantar Fasciitis? Each session will deal with treatment and prevention, as we begin our focus on the most common running/walking injuries.

No Boundaries is coming; folks are already signing up. Diva Night II, (It's OK...let's all just Wine a little) is on the horizon. "For women only" strength training sessions are in the works, as well as our community committments. (More on that soon!)

New Spring product is arriving now. Footwear and apparel continue to evolve and bring new levels of comfort, stability and style. We are introducing a childrens footwear fitting process, sizes 2 and up! Tri- gear and accessories will be available. And, for you trail-aholics, we are adding Montrail trail shoes. We are trying very hard to listen to your needs without straying from our core basic Fitlosophy, a pleasing, productive experience for you, a lifestyle enhancing opportunity for our associates, and our community - working daily to achieve "the complete fit experience."

Arlene and I sincerely thank you for your support, your referrals, and your kind words. Please tell us what we can do to get better, because we really do want to.

Again, Happy New Year to all. We wish you a healthy, peaceful year ahead filled with happy memories. We would love to help where we can!

Best Regards,

Charles Woodruff

Lesedi Project

lesedi project logoMany of you have commented on the colorful beads adorning our front counter.  These are part of a fundraising initiative called the Lesedi Project begun by Balega International.  Balega manufactures the socks we all know and love in Cape Town, South Africa.  In an effort to give back to the local communities on which it depends, Balega supports the Ethembeni School for physically disabled and visually impaired children.

In keeping with Fleet Feet’s commitment to building communities, the two companies became partners in the Lesedi Project in 2006.  On the local front, Fleet Feet Albany has been selling the beadwork, made by Ethembeni students, as well as Lesedi shirts by Descente.  Your efforts to support the project in 2007 directly contributed to the success of the latest initiative.  The kindness and generosity of Fleet Feet customers helped to purchase and deliver a much-needed handicapped-accessible bus to the Ethembeni School this year.  “Thank you” simply can’t express our gratitude for helping achieve this goal in 2007.  New goals will be set in 2008, so look for Lesedi Project news in future newsletters.

Fleet Feet Albany is family-owned and committed to giving back.  Since our opening in April 2006, we have been busy in our local communities as well.  In this short time, we have sponsored numerous races for charity, provided opportunities for student-athletes, and supported the Parsons Child and Family Center’s Team Unstoppable at the Utica Boilermaker.  Planning for 2008 is underway, and we hope to be involved in your community events in a big way this year.

Athletes’ Kitchen

Super Bowl Sunday is coming up February 3.  In between the touchdowns, commercials, and half-time entertainment, we all love the fat-laden, salty treats that can wreak havoc on our diets.  Try these spicy chicken tenders instead of traditional skin-on buffalo wings

Boneless Buffalo Wings

Boneless Buffalo Wings

Ingredients

3 Tbls. Nonfat buttermilk
3 Tbls. Hot pepper sauce (e.g., Frank’s Red Hot), divided
3 Tbls. Distilled white vinegar, divided
2 lbs. Chicken tenders
6 Tbls. Whole wheat flour
6 Tbls. Cornmeal
½ tsp. Cayenne pepper
2 Tbls. Canola oil, divided
2 cups peeled carrot sticks
2 cups celery sticks

Preparation

Whisk buttermilk, 2 tablespoons hot pepper sauce and 2 tablespoons vinegar in large bowl until combined.  Add chicken; toss to coat.  Transfer to the refrigerator and let marinate up to 1 hour, stirring occasionally.

Meanwhile, whisk flour and cornmeal in a shallow dish.  Whisk the remaining 1 tablespoon hot sauce and 1 tablespoon vinegar in a small bowl.

Remove the chicken from the marinade and roll in the flour mixture until evenly coated.  Sprinkle both sides of chicken with cayenne.

Heat 1 tablespoon oil in large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat.  Add half the chicken; cook until golden brown and cooked through, about 4-5 minutes each side.  Transfer to serving platter.  Repeat with remaining tablespoon oil and chicken, reducing the heat if necessary.  Transfer to the serving platter.  Drizzle chicken with reserved hot sauce mixture.  Serve with carrots, celery, and …..

Spicy Blue Cheese Dip

2/3 cup crumbled blue cheese
1 Tablespoon distilled white vinegar
