Fleet Feet Albany August 2008 Newsletter
|
Hi Folks:
Welcome to August. Not quite sure where May, June and July went but welcome to August. Arlene and I hope this edition finds you all well. If you are new Fleet Feet Sports club members and reading our newsletter for the first time, welcome! If you find the contents valuable and interesting invite a friend to subscribe. If you have additional content suggestions we are always open to new ideas.
One more word about our No Boundaries program. After 12 weeks of training this special group of people realized their goal of running or walking a 5K race. We all met at the store at 4:30 a.m. and rode a bus to participate in the Utica Boilermaker 5K. It was a great day! All were successful in their own endeavor and I think motivated to move on to the next “thing.” It was a very proud day for all. For those of you who may be thinking that a 5K run or walk would be something you would like to tackle, but for some reason is out of reach, I invite you to call us and explore No Boundaries with us. You will have a blast and achieve a great goal in the process.
We are also moving forward with our Running 101 program. Running 101 will require a bit of running or walking experience. The program is being designed for the 10K distance, with the goal of participating in one of the local Turkey Trot races. Announcements on both No Boundaries and Running 101 are pending. We would like to begin them both late August.
August will be very busy here, see below details on Bill Rodgers Fun Run night, Saucony Spike Night, and all the other good stuff coming up.
Lastly, a quick story dedicated to Matthew G, Cheyne, Justin, David, Sara, Kyle, Kevin, Patrick W, Matthew W, Gabrielle, Jamie, and Emily. About a week ago I received a call from race director asking if we could list the event on our site. This person is also a customer who had recently been back to the store. When she was greeted at the door by a younger person she was a bit skeptical of the level of service she would receive. To use this person’s words, she was “blown away” by the professionalism, knowledge and caring attitude of the employee she worked with.
The names listed above are important members of our team. They are either college or high school students who unfortunately, but fortunately, only visit us for a short time each year. But they are pros and we ask them to do a lot; they respond by learning, caring , pushing each other to be better and making the atmosphere of the store (along with some good ABBA music) delightful. There is nothing average about these fine people! So, a public thanks to all of the above. You are a great team and you will all achieve your dreams!
Best wishes for a tremendous August!
Charles Woodruff

In memory of Ryan Shay, Saucony came up with the Shay XC. This lightweight, breathable and flexible spike keeps athletes up on their toes and is the ultimate cross country flat. This shoe has a snugger fitting mid-foot than the Kilkenny and is more cushioned than most cross country spikes. Available in both men’s and women’s sizes. |

Athletes’ Kitchen
Late summer brings a bumper crop of local produce. Ripe, red, juicy tomatoes are a real treat, as well as a great source of vitamin C, vitamin A, potassium, fiber, and the antioxidant lycopene. Here are a couple of quick and easy recipes.
Raw Tomato Sauce - Top grilled chicken breasts or pasta. Makes 4 servings.
Combine 1 ½ lbs. chopped, seeded tomatoes, 1/3 cup diced fresh part-skim mozzarella, 2 tablespoons chopped Kalamata olives, 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar, 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, and 1 minced garlic clove. Add fresh basil, fresh marjoram, salt & pepper to taste. Let stand to allow tomatoes to release their juices.
Baked Parmesan Tomatoes
Halve tomatoes horizontally and transfer to a baking sheet, cut side up. Top with Parmesan cheese, oregano, salt & pepper. Drizzle with olive oil and bake in a 450 degree oven until the tomatoes are tender, about 15 minutes.
