Fleet Feet Albany April 2008 Newsletter
Dear Fleet Feet Sports club members:
We sincerely hope this newsletter edition finds you all well.
March was an exciting month for our store! Our second Diva Night was held on March 13, with over fifty very special "Divas" in attendance. Wine tasting, massage therapy, and caricature drawings were the highlights of the evening. Arlene and I would like to thank Joe Benny, our very good friends at Back In Balance (Clifton Park), and Rich Conley for all they did to support this excellent time. No Boundaries kicked off in March as well. No Boundaries, sponsored by New Balance is a "train to run your first 5K program." With over 35 participants we are into our second week of training and the program is off to a great start!
On Sunday, March 30 we had about 40 Empire State Capital Volkssporters use our store as a start point for their 10K walk program. The Volkssporters Club is dedicated to fun, fitness and friendship, information about the club can be gained here or by contacting Marie Klucina
High School track and field is in full swing, we very much look forward to seeing the results of the talented athletes we have in our community. Road racing is also kicking into gear. Congratulations to Tom and Marcia Adams for an excellent job in race directing last week's Delmar Dash.
April, as you will read, is a busy month.
Our talk with George P. Kansas promises to be a highlight. Please save this date; you will be happy to have set the time aside. We are proud for the second year to sponsor the Fleet Feet Sports Bethlehem Lady Eagles Track and Field Invitational. This ladies only event will be held on April 19th at the Bethlehem High School track. Please come out and watch these athletes perform.
That's it for now. Remember our FUN RUN on Thursday evenings. We leave from the store at 6PM, attendance is growing, this run is for ALL levels of ability. Our Sportwalkers Club is also growing. There is technique instruction and a workout, also beginning at 6PM on Thursday evenings; we have had many requests for a walkers only club, this is only the beginning, come join us! Bring a friend!
As always and with sincere thanks, Arlene and I appreciate your support.
We wish you a peaceful month ahead.
Charles and Arlene Woodruff
Proudly owning

Join us on Wednesday, April 23 at 7:30 pm for a truly special event. George P. Kansas, father, coach, author, speaker, cancer survivor, and marathon runner will be here to share his experiences with us.
With a disarming sense of humor, George will discuss the important role running has played in his recovery and life after cancer. He’ll share three “secrets” he was happy to have discovered before his illness, and how each of us can use them today to enhance our running, our lives, and our relationships. Engaging the audience in a process he calls “Emotional Archaeology,” George asks attendees to bring a healthy curiosity to this program. His improvisational style should stimulate some fascinating discussion.
George will be signing copies of his book Jumper Cables for the Marathon Runner’s Soul (2003), as well as his latest Jumper Cables for the Healing Soul (2007), in which he chronicles his diagnosis and recovery from a rare leukemia.
George’s story is engaging, inspirational, and entertaining. Don’t miss this one! Call today to reserve a seat. 518-459-3338

It’s time to start thinking about summer training – establishing a good base for the cross country season and bonding with teammates. Attending a summer camp can be one of the best experiences for young runners. While there are far too many camps to list here, we have compiled a short list of excellent programs within a couple hours’ drive from the Capital Region.

Athletes’ Kitchen
Late February through early April is maple sugar season in the North Country. Sugar makers work 24 hours a day, tending fires that turn each 35 gallons of maple sap into one gallon of syrup. The following recipes try to extend our use of delicious maple syrup beyond the usual pancakes and waffles. (Each recipe serves 2, but can easily be doubled, etc.)
Maple Glazed Chicken Breasts
& Mashed Maple Squash
Maple Glazed Chicken Breasts
2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
1 tablespoon reduced-sodium soy sauce
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1 clove garlic, minced
1 teaspoon minced fresh ginger
¼ teaspoon freshly ground pepper
2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, trimmed of fat
- Whisk first 6 ingredients together. Add chicken and turn to coat with the marinade. Cover and refrigerate about 2 hours, turning once.
- Coat a broiler pan or indoor grill pan with cooking spray. Place chicken (reserving the marinade) on pan and grill 3-5 minutes per side, until done.
- Meanwhile, pour reserved marinade into a small saucepan and simmer over medium heat. Cook until reduced by about half, about 4 minutes. Liberally baste chicken with reduced sauce and serve.
1 acorn squash (about 1 ¼ lbs.), halved and seeded
2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
1 teaspoon butter
¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
¼ teaspoon salt
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Coat a 9-by-13 inch baking pan with cooking spray.
- Place squash halves cut-side down in the prepared pan. Bake until soft, about 50 minutes. Let cook for 10 minutes.
- Scrape the soft squash flesh into a medium bowl. Stir in maple syrup, butter, cinnamon, and salt with a fork, mashing the squash until smooth.
